‘Founded in 1971, New ERA is Nepal’s first non-government, non-profit research organization that specializes in data-driven policy research, technical assistance, technology transfer and training for development in Nepal. It used a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methods to provide its clients a data-based, independent, and unbiased perspective, also informed by intimate knowledge of the country that can be used to formulate, implement, and assess development policies and programs.’

Since its inception in 1971, New ERA has been dedicated to advancing Nepal’s development through high-quality research, technical assistance, and capacity-building. Our work spans diverse sectors and aims to address the country's most pressing challenges, particularly for the socially and economically disadvantaged. We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of excellence in all our endeavors, as we have done for over five decades. As we look forward, our focus will be on optimizing our resource assets to continue influencing policies and improving the lives of the Nepali people.

New ERA has successfully conducted many national-level surveys, including the Nepal Demographic Health Surveys of 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016; the Nepal Health Facility Survey 2015; the Nepal Micro Nutrient Status Surveys of 1998 and 2016; the Assessment of Quality of Care in Birthing Centers of Nepal 2013, 2014; the Female Community Health Volunteer Surveys 2005, 2006; the Immunization Coverage Survey of Nepal 2010; the National Disability Survey – 2001; and the Nepal Multiple Indicators Surveillance Surveys of 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2000.

Large Scale National Level Surveys

New ERA’s professional research staff are highly experienced in both quantitative and qualitative research. New ERA has considerable experience in designing implementing and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative studies and it has successfully carried out many studies that are solely qualitative in nature.

Qualitative research

New ERA has trained and professional human resources who can implement surveys that require anthropometric measurements to assess nutritional status in target populations.

Anthropometric Measurements

New ERA has considerable experience in providing technical support for project formulation and implementation. It has conducted pilot tests for new technologies and their adaptation and dissemination in rural communities

Internship Program

Learning from its decades years of experience, and most recently, its experience of managing the New ERA Harka Gurung Fellowship involving young research fellows, and the struggle its mentors have been facing for getting their fellows to produce quality thesis papers, New ERA has also realized a need for providing youths opportunities to experience a more grounded, hands-on training for producing quality research.

Fellowship Program

Dr. Harka Bahadur Gurung was&nbsp;a Nepalese geographer, anthropologist, author, artist and politician, known for his pioneer conservation work. He was born on 5th January 1939 in Lamjung, in the village of Taranche.&nbsp;After completing his secondary education at King George Military School, he studied for a B.A. and M.A. in Geography at Patna University&nbsp;and later received a PhD from Edinburgh University. Dr. Gurung published fifteen books and around 675 academic articles and reports on a wide range of topics from culture, demography, development planning, environment, geography, political economy, and tourism. He held important government posts such as the minister of state for education, Industry and Commerce, Minister of State for Tourism, and was the vice-chairperson of the National Planning commission on Population, Nepal.
